Poor weather and overloaded systems lead to delays for some Christmas gifts

NEW YORK — Santa's sleigh didn't make it in time for Christmas for some this year due to shipping problems at UPS and FedEx.

FedEx tried for 4 days last week to deliver a package to me. On two of those days they claimed that due to inclement weather they couldn't deliver. Of course the sun was shining on those days so I had to assume that their driver was at the beach tanning. Finally, I had to go get the package from them since they were incapable of delivering it when we weren't at work. Very poor service!

So in other words people waited until the last second to order online and are surprised when they didn't get their package on time. Maybe they should plan a little better in the future instead of blaming everything on the delivery companies who can't predict the weather or the number of last second shoppers there would be.

@bosshog, I ordered all my gifts in November, and there were 3 separate packages that did not make it in time, and I got 2 yesterday. One had to be re-delivered because they only deliver during the day, like anyone is ever home then.

Agree that poor planning on ones part (last minute shoppers) does not necessitate an emergency on UPS's part. On the other hand, UPS committed to delivery by Christmas on some of these purchases (not all though). UPS was overwhelmed by last minute packages. I talked to a UPS driver last night, still delivering package Christmas Eve night at 6PM!!! He was trying hard, but the volume of online purchases was underestimated.

I was one of those folks wondering if my last minute gift would show. According to amazon it arrived at the UPS Minneapolis office at 2:45 pm the 24th, but due to "severe weather"???? It was not delivered that day (1 inch of snow?). So yah, me not an perfect planner. reality is that stuff comes up last minute. And promises of Xmas eve delivery make decisions not to runaround town picking up last minute gifts. Lesson is don't trust UPS to get the job done.

I work for FedEx and can tell you that one of the biggest problems we faced locally is a corporate decision that in order to save money, the company was going to retire many older planes, but not replace them with new ones on a one to one ratio, but a new plane for every two retired. The company is thinking that in the future there will be less overnight shipping going on, and more people and businesses will be cost conscious and go for a cheaper alternative. FedEx Express does not staff temps for holiday volumes. They try and make due with who and what they have, and if the company can not make their commitment times, they will more often than not claim it was a weather or mechanical problem with the planes so they can skip out on the time commitment. That is the way of business nowadays: Make sure you have as many caveats available as possible. FedEx is no longer the company of Absolutely Positively Get There Overnight that it once was. You never hear that in any ads anymore, do you? Cut costs no matter for the board members and stock holders, service be damned. Sad.

My UPS driver delivered after 9pm on Monday and 7:30pm on Tues. Hope he gets overtime!

My last gift was delivered by UPS on Christmas Eve, long after I was no longer working. I try to expedite things by making sure they have my 9 digit zip. I'm sure it couldn't be easy, with every company offering free shipping to deal with the shortened season, and people waiting to the last minute because they can.

I paid $21 for overnight delivery. According to shipment tracking my package was on the truck for delivery by 10:44am 12/24. It did not make it to me. While I realize asking for delivery on Christmas Eve is a lot, I did confirm that FedEx would be delivering that day before I shelled out the extra $21. I was willing to pay $21 for my procrastination. I was not willing to pay $21 and not get my sister's gift in time for Christmas. Yet here I sit...
