Sid Hartman: Blame this one on Vikings defense, not Cassel

  • Article by: SID HARTMAN , Star Tribune

The Bears and the Eagles came to town as contenders for playoff spots, and the Vikings, despite the fact that they were out of playoff contention, dominated the Eagles and beat the Bears in overtime. In between those games they lost a thrilling contest on the road against Baltimore.

Sid, Cassel fumbled away the ball for no reason which lead to a first and goal. Then threw a pick 6. He proceed to butcher short passes and threw in to double and triple coverage multiple times. He should of had 5 picks but Cincy dropped 2 this was worse than any of Ponder performances. There is no answer on our current roster for the QB position.

The Vikings defense has been their main problem all year. They only need to give up 18 points next weekend to break the Vikings record for most points allowed. All this has happened during a year while most Vikings fans talk about the quarterback situation. Our defense is what cost us the playoffs. Cassel isn't going to be throwing the ball into the teeth of the opponents defense time after time if the Vikings have any defense at all but the Vikings don't. Ease off Sid a little. He's stating the obvious if you can look at the whole team and not just the quarterback position.

Cassel also had to play with a limited rushing attack. Gerhart went out right away with a hamstring pull and Peterson was already playing with an injury. You get way behind in a game like this and the other team can expect you to pass the ball. Our passing game needs a little fine tuning all around before it can deal with that type of challenge.

In decades of reading, a coach, GM or owner has never been the culpable party.

Sid, the moving vans should be packing the coaching staffs items...so they break is both clean and swift after the Det game. Coaching has been the heart of this teams shortfalls all year.

I know what happened, it was Ponder in Cassel's jersey so we can say it was Ponder's fault and he didnt pass the eye test. That way the defense can be over looked as well as the oline and play calling

Uh, yeah, you can blame it on Cassel. You can't have that kind of QB play and win a game. Of course the defense looked bad. But if your offense looked good, at least you would make a game out of it. This is a new NFL, if you haven't already figured it out. You need a good QB and passing game to compete. If your defense is adequate, then you will win a lot of games. There aren't going to be any 6-3 type games anymore.

Oh well, the Vikings stunk, but we have the Wild, oops they stink too, how about those T'wolves, oops they stink too. At least the Twins didn't lose!!! At the present time Minnesota has only one pro sports team that is competitive, the Lynx.
