Jim Souhan: Aging, inept Vikings defense has few salvageable parts

CINCINNATI – At halftime of the Vikings’ loss to the Bengals on Sunday, monkeys riding dogs herded goats into a pen.

When you refer to a brain trust, who exactly does that mean. Spielman assembled the pile of nothing that is attempting to play defense this year. He gave us Ponder followed by a QB circus. If the vikings are serious about making a change, the place to start is Spielman. As long as he is here, the vikings will be a mess. Frazier needs to go as well, but he is not the root of the problem. You need to go up a pay grade to find that.

On another article, I commented that I couldn’t wait to see what excuse Souhan, Reusse and Frazier’s other media apologists came up with for this game. Now we know: Blame Spielman and Williams; Frazier had nothing to do with it.

I think Patterson has a chance to be a special WR in the NFL, and the Vikings will hopefully be glad they made that draft day trade in the long run. In the short term though, the price they paid was an aging defense without alot of young pieces behind it. 2 new linebackers, 2 defensive lineman, a safety and a corner are needed now. That's alot for one offseason.

The owner and the management of this team is the REAL ISSUE. The owner is an "outlaw" sheltering under his wealth and lawyers while the GM survives under the mess and distractions going on with the Wilf debacle. This team have never been the Vikings we knew in the late 60's and 70's. Time for a huge overhaul and sale to local interests. I may be the lone wolf in the wilderness of hopelessness, blatant corruption and ineptitude we now experience in the US.

I wonder if the Vikings will ever win a Super Bowl before I die.

Super bowl? I've been waiting since 1961. Many times the ride is nice, but with Minnesota sports, the other shoe will always drop. Just be prepared for disappointments on our super bowl journey.

For Christmas, the secondary got a box of Solarcaine because they get burned so often!

Last Sunday praised. Today spurned. Next Sunday they line up again. Fickle fans.

Jim's right, this D is old and talentless. Then again, we knew that before the season ever started didn't we?
