Hartman: Dumping Frazier won't solve all of Vikings' issues

  • Article by: SID HARTMAN , Star Tribune

The Vikings are 3-2-1 over their past six games. By beating Cincinnati on Sunday and then defeating the Lions, who rarely win here, in the season finale, maligned coach Leslie Frazier could show why he is still the right man for the job, keeping the team competitive most of the season with four losses by a total of 12 points.

I believe all of Sid's readers are bored with his endless efforts to maintain Minnesota coaching personnel. As far as I am concerned, Frazier lost his job when he kept insisting Ponder was his starting quarterback. Before Leslie leaves, I feel that Spielman should go first. It is obvious he hasn't got a clue on how to build a winning franchise. Vikings, Twins, Timberwolves....great to be a Minnesota pro sports fan!

When the season started most experts had the Packers wining the north with the Vikings in last place… and that’s pretty much the way it’s turning out. Some people are acting like the Vikings were Super Bowl favorites and the coach has blown the season. I hope the Vikings keep Frazier… these last couple of years have been great coaching experience.

It sure would be a good start though. I don't understand the Frazier infatuation of the local press. He must be a super nice guy.

Too many bonehead mistakes by the coaching staff this year cost them at least 3 to 4 games. 99% percent to the Viking fans could see the Cassell should be their #1 QB. An important part of coaching the NFL is working the ref's . Frazier sits a on the sideline and say NOTHING! Yes a coaching change is needed.

Sid, Don't fire Brewster! Don't fire Brewster! Don't fire Brewster! You just read his stuff that is written by others and laugh.

Fire Rick Spielman. A Disaster in Miami...even worse in Minnesota. Anyone can make decent 1st round draft choices..unless you choose Ponder.

Cassel probably opts out of his contract if Ponder is back. Vikes should concentrate on getting something for Ponder in a trade. I agree with the Vikes decision to play Ponder because they had to make sure he was not the long term answer at QB before they wasted another high draft pick. With Cassel as a starter they do not need someone who can start immediately. As for coach Frazier I believe the Vikes should keep him for the final year of his contract. Sure a Cowher,Dungy,or Gruden super bowl coach would be great but lets get real. These guys may not coach anywhere next year let alone in Minny. I agree changes on the staff may be necessary but Frazier should stay. There may also be multiple coach vacancies again this year and the Vikes are probably not going to be in a postion to hire the best coaches.

The funniest line of the season uttered by my brother in law during a Vikings game this season. ME: Do you think Frazier's headset is turned on? BIL: I don't even think he knows its on his head :)

Sid is correct: The Vikings should keep Frazier, and instead, address the coaching staff with change. If the Bears do not sign Cutler, it seems to me he might be a good fit here.

Reading Sid's comments, are we to write off the ineptitude of Frazier as merely team bad luck? Sorry, I don't buy that. If Frazier gets let go by the Vikings, how many NFL teams do you think will be clamoring to hire him as Head Coach? Sorry, but therein lies your answer Sid..
