Target shoppers undeterred by data breach; welcome 10 percent discount

On one of the busiest weekends of the holiday season, Target held on to many loyal customers who flocked to its Twin Cities stores.

I was at Target in St. Louis Park today and spent $180 in electronics and about $80 in general/household goods. I didn't received a discount at either register. I'm extremely disappointed in this. I feel lied to.

Target is handling this right. Card data without the security code or PIN isn't much good. Can't wait to find out who is responsible.

Target was the victim of a crime. Why some people got so irate at Target I won't understand....they are the victim, not the criminal. When a house is robbed we don't blame the homeowner.

@getcrazy, they scanned a separate barcode at the register before you pay. My own cashier said it was difficult to remember that extra step on such a busy day, especially since it's out of the normal routine. Bring in your receipt and show you didn't get the discount and they should honor it retroactively. I only use my Target Visa at Target, so I am confident my personal bank accounts aren't at risk. Everybody at the store today was especially personable and the cashier even apologized for the trouble

There is a question of who was a "victim" of a crime. The announcement of the “breach” in credit card security came from the outside by a one-time Washington Post writer, now a cyber security journalist. It was not Target but Brian Krebs who first reported the breach Wednesday afternoon. so that is what set off the announcement by Target, and then the ten percent discount. I am one of the 40 million forced to monitor my credit card. All of this could have been averted if Target along with my credit card company used chip technology within the cards, like they do in Europe. Target is not the victim. The consumer is. If Target realized the PR nightmare their own credit cards would have those chips.

The real issue is that Target and other credit card issuers are still using 1970s credit card technology. Europe has switched to an embedded computer chip in credit cards, while the U.S. sticks with magnetic strips because of the cost of the overhaul. Message to Target, American Express, and Visa: Upgrade to chips and get it over with!

@dtmonkeyboy - you have no way of currently knowing if target is a victim or greedy. If they willingly underfunded or improperly tested security of people's data then they were willfully negligent. This could be why they have been reluctant on making any statements on what happened for fear of class action lawsuits.

It's always about money, whether big corporation or middle-America consumer. A bargain is a bargain, regardless of how angry we are at Target. Yet when corporations show their love of a buck we can't quite understand it.

They were reluctant to public right away because they were trying to figure out what happened and to try catch who did this. If the bad guys don't know they've been made, then investigators have a leg up in looking for them. But if you make it public, then the bad guys are much more difficult to catch. It had nothing to do with fearing lawsuits or anything else.
