hospital staff members were providing transfusions to counteract the blood loss = = = not sure what more could have been done. Is it possible this was the first anyone knew she was hemophiliac (spell?) or unable to normally clot?

Sounds like DIC occurred (Disseminated intravascular coagulation). My late sister was a labor and delivery nurse. Back in the late 80's/early 90's she took a class on recognizing this condition in pregnant women. It was a good thing she did because soon after she had a patient whose baby had died in-utero and was going through labor who had this happen to her. When my sister told the doctor of her suspicions, he told her you don't know what you are talking about. Well she did, thank God. They ended up running 80+ units of blood through her before they got the bleeding stopped, but they saved her life and she recovered.
