Federal bill could help Civil War soldier from Wisconsin receive highest military honor

MILWAUKEE — A Civil War soldier from Wisconsin who made a valiant last stand at Gettysburg might finally receive the nation's highest military decoration.

Cushing was 22 when he died. Although grievously wounded he helped defend a Union position that, if it fell, could have turned the tide in favor of Confederate forces. What does THAT mean? For the war or that one battle?

Students of history will recognize that if Gettysburg had fallen, the South would have made their first inroads into the North, which in turn would have made Washington, DC very vulnerable and probably would have turned the tide of the war. That said, their must have been many of the same type of heroes in the 1st Minnesota at Cemetery Ridge.

If you just search "Alonzo Cushing" on the internet you'll get your answer. He commanded an artillery battery despite shrapnel cutting through his shoulder and abdomen(he had to hold in his own entrails). Another hit killed him later on.
