Scientists have documented a recent influx of crows into metropolitan areas. In winter, these so-called “Mega Murders” can provide city dwellers with an awesome spectacle.

I love watching the awesome crow procession as my bus departs downtown in the winter dusk. It sometimes reminds me of some of John August Swanson’s liturgical art where he depicts hosts upon hosts of people streaming in to gather together. Good article.

There have been large flocks of crows frequenting the banks of the Mississippi in south Minneapolis for about 30 years. It's a bit unnerving, especially in the winter when the bare tree branches make the crows more visible, to walk underneath them. Shades of Alfred Hitchcock!

Thanks for a great story -- well-written, and very interesting. A few years ago, when I took a birding seminar, our instructor attributed an increase in scavenger birds to a widespread policy of not cleaning up road kill. Perhaps this too contributes to these bigger murders.

We watch the murder arrive every night and roost temporarily in 3 empty lots near Glenwood and 94 before heading to Loring park to sleep. I estimate between 20-30 thousand some evenings. They are extremely smart and social. You can sense the communication between them.
