Senate confirms new homeland security secretary, takes up more nominations

WASHINGTON — Democrats used their newly initiated lower threshold for defeating filibusters Monday to win Senate confirmation of President Barack Obama's nomination of former top Pentagon lawyer Jeh C. Johnson to be secretary of homeland security.

A 57-37 vote is decisive. Requiring a 60 vote majority is a formula for gridlock.

It seems to me that the "homeland security secretary" job should go to the person most qualified for that job. In what way is that related to Republican or Democrat? Politics is so broken it's incredible.
