Five thoughts from a football Sunday that, as usual, was not short on surprises.

How said has Ponder's play been? So bad, that people think Cassel is a good QB. Cassel is a good backup QB, nothing more. Trade for Cousins and pick Dennard with the 1st round pick. Both ex-Spartans are better than anything Vikings fans have seen this year at QB and CB. And both are high quality young men. Intelligent and articulate.

I would keep Cassel for 2 years and draft a QB in the 1st round. The Vikings would then have a viable starter or back up in Cassel and we could look to the future in the pick. I am not convinced that Cousins or Foles or any other available QB is that much better than Cassel that they would be worth the cost of trading for them.

I wouldn't give up a 2nd for Cousins. Third, maybe. Shanny has a history of getting a lot out of his QB's. If Teddy is gone, go with McCarron in the 2nd & defense the rest of the draft.

I would love to know if Leslie's standard line of "Christain gives us the best chance to win" was coming from him or Spielman. All of us Monday morning QB's knew Cassel should have been starting Week 1. This cost us a potential playoff berth and someone in this organization needs to pay for their inability to judge talent. Herm Edwards once said "You play to win the game"…instead we decided to try and prove that we didn't waste a first round pick on an average backup QB, thus wasting the 2013 season. Great job guys

Keeping Cassel as the pencilled-in starter for next season is the wisest move we have available right now, since we don't know who will be on the draft board at our pick or on the market (Schaub, Vick, Foles, Cousins, etc.). He'll likely outplay any challenger in camp and pre-season, and could be a good bridge to the next QB. Ponder probably has to go for the sake of locker-room reasons, although he could be a solid backup in the right system - just not ours. Freeman is just too much of a question mark. It's a bird-in-hand vs in the bush situation, and Cassel can win in the NFL.

Insisting on drafting a QB in the first round (when the talent didn't warrant it) was how we got into the Christian Ponder situation in the first place. Whether Bridgewater or Manziel (or the second tier) can be a franchise QB is questionable, and there is no Andrew Luck out there this year. Having a two-year Cassel era may be the smartest move, but time will tell.

Drew Brees, just might know a thing or two about football I'm guessing and he said a few weeks ago, "Johnny Manziel is the most NFL ready college QB there is because he plays in he toughest college division. He may be small but being tall, stong and fast doesn't make you a good QB in the NFL. Knowing how to read defenses makes you a good QB in the NFL and Johnny Manzil knows how to do that". Not an opinion of an arm chair QB. That's the opinion of an actually ProBowl NFL QB. Hmmm...Bridgewater=Vick and McCarron= Ponder.

there is no way the vikings are in the hunt if cassel is the QB all year - it just doesn't work that way. also, dante's -roll- was a pretty lame celebration by all accounts.

If Cassel would have had a better second start against Carolina after the bye he would have probably been the starter but he played one of the worst QB games in that one. So the braintrust decided to try the Freeman experiment which backfired so it was back to Ponder again. I am sure the brain trust is trying everything to avoid using another #1 on a QB. If Cassel finishes strong he may be a bridge to a young QB but I do not think he is a long term answer or a franchise QB.

My money is on Ponder being named the starter next season. Why? It's the bonehead move to make and this team has made bonehead move after bonehead move.
