Hartman: Coach K raves over Love's game

  • Article by: SID HARTMAN , Star Tribune

Mike Krzyzewski, the great Duke basketball coach was at Apple Valley on Thursday to watch two of his star recruits for the Class of 2014, Apple Valley’s Tyus Jones and Chicago Whitney Young’s Jahlil Okafor. While naturally being impressed by those two players, both ranked in the top five nationally, he had time to sing the praises of Timberwolves forward Kevin Love, whom he coached on a world championship team and an Olympic winner in 2012.

I once met Coach K in the summer of 2008. It was just before the NBA draft and I asked him who he thought the T-Wolves would take with the third pick. We shook hands, I got a picture with him, and then I said "Go Army!" He replied with "Beat Navy!" This was the only time I have met him and it lasted about 30 seconds. Does this mean we are now "close personal friends?"

it is sad the college coaches have to come to drool all over these high school basketball or football kids. coach k should have a better record when he is following and drooling this much. the two kids in the article after college will be at a disadvantage to find jobs when the don't make a pro team or stay in poor paying low level basketball type. they would be better off playing in Minneapolis for an example. remember the fortune 500 companies. something needs to change in recuiting because it certainly is not in their best interest, right now

"coach k should have a better record when he is following and drooling this much." WHAT? A better record then whom? Coach K is nearing in on 1,000 wins--more than any other major college coach. Plus 4 NCAA championships. Also, how long much longer is there a need to perpetuate the "Fortune 500" recruiting argument (or rather myth). Be a Gopher and get a job with a Fortune 500 company. Most recruits don't read Fortune and don't know what a Fortune 500 company is. Walmart, Target, Best Buy are Fortune 500 companies. Sure, these companies are hiring but high paying corporate positions for a power forward or a lock-down cornerback seems more like the exception than the rule. How many kids get recruited and not only don't get the big corporate jobs let alone get their degree? If its education and career, I'd take my chances with Coach K and a Duke education. p.s. I'm not a "Dooookie"

tigers42 has missed my main point. why do these college coaches have to drool all over these kids to begin with, and that there should be changes in college recruiting. you have juvenile kids that think what the coaches say is true, and once in a while it is.

Why does Kill deserve a raise? He hasn't coached a full season. I am sympathetic to his condition but it isn't like he was the head coach for all the games. If anyone deserves a raise it is his assistants.
