“It’s more tradition than anything,” said Joe Sheena, a Michigan State senior. “We’re not a school of pyromaniacs.”

Come on kids! It is just a football game! With celebrations like that, it makes folks think that you thought a victory over the Buckeyes was near impossible, a thought that should not have crossed your minds given how good the Spartans have been all year. Hell, they were even good enough to bit Minnesota albeit not by much!

Fits in with the dysfunctional sports fan culture that has evolved in the US and other places.

This culture has grown over the years to where it is expected by the public and the students. The comment at the end of the story by the senior at MSU tells it all. It is just a tradition to burn things and cause a riot. And as we all get used to this happening we don't even question that it happens anymore. We are just glad no one is killed...at least I don't think anyone was killed? Nice.

Michigan State would have been going regardless of the outcome of the game! If Ohio State won, then Michigan State would move up to the Rose Bowl. If they win, they also go to the Rose Bowl. I get that winning and going to the Rose Bowl is better than losing and going to the Rose Bowl, but the result didn't matter!

With today's technology, it shouldn't be difficult to photo ID everyone who participated in this destruction of property (both public & private). Find each and every one and lock 'em up from Dec 31st- Jan 2nd.

I'm sorry, but I don't think building big bonfires in December after a huge football victory constitute a "riot." Sure, the police have a right to be worried that someone will get hurt or that the bonfire will get out of control. But that's not the same as a crowd going down a street, breaking windows, over-turning cars, setting stores aflame. I think this headline is unfair to MSU students.
