Well, a Friday night stinker. Is anyone surprised? Michigan State had a losing record. I really hope Lucia's history of Friday nights poor play does not rear its ugly head again this season.

The only thing that was a stinker was the result. The Gophers put forth a strong effort all night and clearly outplayed the Spartans.

Can we pleas stop with shootouts? Thats like ending a basketball game with a 3 point contest or baseball game with a home run derby.

Bring out the clowns and start playing the calliope when it's time for the shootout, the most asinine addition to hockey. Why must gimmickry be used to determine an outcome? It's an embarrassment to the game.

Power play misery: Gophs cycle endlessly out on the blueline/perimeter, defense is in tight to the goal. Very few shots. Q: Why doesn't anyone try to take the puck to the net?

What was with the celebration at the end of the game by the Spartans. They didn't win the game. They acted like they just won the championship.

mgalaforetDec. 7, 13 6:29 AM

Maybe because they Spartans aren't even ranked gold1515, and the Gophers are #1?

Your comparisons are right on, tvclemson! Could not agree more. No place for it in a team sport and not at all fair to the goalies who were on the ice for the entire game. I'd like to see each team be required to put in a substitute goalie for the shootout. If shootouts are not going away, however, I would be curious to know if the Gophers practice for it and how the coaches decide who to put out there.

Michigan State...not even ranked in the top 30 in the country. It has always been said Don Lucia can do less with more. #UNDERACHIEVE. And whoever decided to add shoot outs should be fired.

ericgus55Dec. 7, 13 7:28 AM

As much as I'm no fan of ties, shootouts are far worse. The comparison to a three-point contest or home-run derby are correct (why not an empty-net and shoot from the opposite goal line?). It's nothing but ridiculous gimmickry, but unfortunately, some fans are dumb enough to like them, so I doubt they'll ever go away.
