Do selfies equal girl power?

If you ask a group of first-grade girls who the best runner in the class is, they all point to themselves: I’m the best runner, they’ll say. Ask a group of sixth-grade girls, and they’ll point to the best runner.

I'd be more heartened by girls displaying their abilities and accomplishments rather than their looks.

No. Selfies are essentially people sexualizing themselves. They look vain and unintelligent, and anyone who does it too often is immediately removed from my news feed.

Those who post selfies display a lack of self-esteem and self-confidence with a load of narcissism thrown in. It certainly doesn't demonstrate girl power, but an absence of knowledge of their vulnerability.

Selfies are more an expression of I'm OK, happy to be me. Lets not get swept up on broad brush negativity.
