MADISON, Wis. — Cold weather put a damper on Wisconsin's gun deer season, leading hunters to cut their outings short and a slightly weaker harvest than last year, state wildlife officials said Tuesday.

We hunt in Sawyer county, south of Hayward, and 20 hunters saw no bucks, and only a few does. There was virtually no shooting heard around us the entire opening weekend. Most of our hunting party sit, but the wind and snow made for good walking, and I jumped the only doe I saw while still hunting. It used to be common that a person still hunting would jump 20 deer on the opening day. Those days are over.

We drove plenty of deer. My experience is the deer are sitting and waiting so hunters spending time on ATVs or just sitting and waiting themselves will wait a long time. People need to invest in an area for sign, food and activity and then work it. Crying because one didn't fall in your lap will only get you crying.

Cold hampered some hunters but in our area of pierce county corn was the issue. When farmers leave the corn the deer know where to hide you would too if someone was hunting you. I understand farmers can't pick it if it's not dry but me being a non farmer I wonder what kind of losses and damage does a farmer receive on the acreage from animals or knock down from weather versus paying propane cost to dry it? There was very little shooting the whole nine day season compared to other years. I asked alot of people who stated the same thing that very few deer were taken or seen. Notice how eelmo talks of driving the deer? If his huge driving party doesn't drive he also sees no deer but this is the drive and blast mentality of guys who shoot them any old way! Deer go completely nocturnal when they know orange is in the woods. We been hunting over 20yrs at this locale and we know when the gun fire is low the count of kill will be low. It all depends on where you hunted and the corn.
