Hartman: Gophers' miscues proved too costly against Badgers

  • Article by: SID HARTMAN , Star Tribune

After losing the previous two games to Wisconsin by a combined 90-26 score, you might think that Gophers coach Jerry Kill would accept Saturday’s 20-7 loss to the 16th-ranked Badgers as progress, but that wasn’t the case when Kill held his postgame news conference.

I'm 40 years old and have been a huge Viking's fan for as long as I can remember; I've never deliberately avoided watching a game before, but I will not watch another game with Ponder the starter. Sid, you can cite any statistics you want and note that previous quarterbacks have taken time to develop, but Ponder will never be an NFL caliber starting quarterback. I realize I'm no expert, but his problem isn't trying to make plays that aren't there, it's not making the plays that are there. I'm sure Zygi and Mark could care less about my opinion, but I'm done until Ponder's on the bench for good.

Sid get off the Ponder bandwagon! In a league dominated by quarterback play, the Vikings will never win consistently with Ponder. Why Speilman and Frazier can't see that is beyond me. The only thing that will cure what is wrong with this team is a new GM, a new coach and a new QB!

Comparing Ponder to the early struggles of Brees and Eli Manning?! Puhhleeezzz! College stats: Ponder 7,000 yards 49 Tds and 30 Ints Manning 10,000 yards 81 tds and 36 ints. Brees 12,000 yards 90 tds. I'll be generous and say that Ponder was roughly 60% effective as Brees and maybe 70% of Manning. Now, let's measure his growth as a pro vs theirs! Let's not? Agreed. Give Freeman the shot Ponder is getting - We know what Ponder can't do. Let's find out what Freeman can. What a mess :(

Only 4 comments hours after the column was published? Sid, your undying support of Ponder and Frazier have readers wondering about your sanity!

Glad the Gophers football program is improving. I thought Brewster had dug a hole they could have taken a decade to climb out of. I look forward to more competitive games in seasons to come.

Why the continued adoration for Ponder, Sid? He might give you a decent game every 4th time out but the 3 in between will be horrid. Ponder stinks Sid, he really does.

I still wish the Gophers had not bought out of the Home and Home with North Carolina (were they really to be feared?). At the time, the Northwestern win was a big one, but it doesn't look that great now. I will give credit where credit is due on the Nebraska win - that was wonderful. It is nice to see an 8 win season, but the victories (with the exception of Nebraska) have not really been against even middle-of-the-road teams. The Iowa performance was a nightmare. No one knows what Gophers team is going to show up each week. One 8 win season does not a dynasty make. Lets hope that Gopher Football is really moving forward and this season is not just smoke and mirrors.
