On the team bus, once an improbable comeback was safely in the record books, a freshman on the Gophers women’s hockey team quietly approached senior co-captain Bethany Brausen.

Thirty-five years later, Peters retired from coaching with one of the most impressive lists of achievements in the history of collegiate sports: 744 victories as a head coach, 702 coming at Bemidji State alone, to make Peters the first coach to win 700 or more games at a single school; 13 small-college national championships; and still-standing national collegiate records for most wins in an unbeaten season (31-0-0 in 1983-’84) and longest unbeaten streak (43 games from Nov. 8, 1983 to Jan. 1, 1985).

You might want to look at the record books

Actually, I think you'll find that the Badger women's team had a couple of 30+ game winning streaks a few years ago. One of those was the streak the Gophers broke that in turn gave them the longest women's hockey winning streak.

Science guy, nobody cares about Division II hockey. The Gopher women could have beaten that BSU team!!!

Really, I guess you should look at who was on that team. Of course most gopher fans are blind to think of another team may have done well...Wisconsin also had some great teams.

The previous NCAA record for most consecutive wins by a women's D-I hockey team was 21 set by Harvard during the 2007-08 season. Wisconsin held the record for longest unbeaten streak; it included a least one tie in the middle. I believe that was 32 games.

Amazing how sciencguy12 (I assume he doesn't know how to spell science) goes off on some tangent about an obscure small school. Who cares?! It's like saying the '85-'90 Bemidji bantam girls hockey team won 82 consecutive games. The real story is...Congratulations to the women's hockey team for their success. It's difficult to win so many games with the thought of the streak in the back of your mind. Go Gophers!

Not only is this winning streak a record with every win. It also includes two national championships so it wasn't like they were playing a bunch of nobodys.

magneto12Nov. 15, 13 7:23 AM

Dotty, No they couldn't. They didn't start a women's team till Nov. 1997.

The current streak is very very impressive. It is interesting that the goalie can really influence this stuff. The two closest scares have been against some of the bottom tier teams in the WCHA the past two years- BSU and SCSU.
