We've got something the Iranians need: Environmental expertise

The country is plagued by environmental problems, and if the United States were to help solve them, other cooperation may ensue.

I doubt Iran lacks the knowledge. They lack the political will to inflict pain on their people today to get the benefit down the road. See every politician on the planet :)

The real issue is not the effect of western sanctions or a supposed lack of political will on the part of the Iranians. The root problem is global warming, of which US or UN scientists have had no success in convincing even their own politicians. Katrina and Sandy and the devastation in Haiti and the Philippines are all sisters to the dust storms in Iran. To paraphrase John Donne, who said it best:" Do not send to ask for whom the bell tolls/ It tolls for me and thee."
