Rand: Big-name Twins have switched positions before

Hall of Famers Harmon Killebrew, Rod Carew and Kirby Puckett finished their careers in different roles from when they started.

Good analysis. The Twins had always tried a switch of Carew to 3B in 1971, the year after he had his knee torn up at second when Mike Hegan hit him with a rolling block. Carew played two games at third and wasn't too comfortable there. For Killebrew, playing 1B and 3B allowed the Twins to get guys like Don Mincher and Rich Reese in the lineup, so Killer's flexibility was valuable to the team in many ways. The thing many of us don't understand was why they had him in left field for several years, even in 1964 when Oliva came up and Bob Allison, not Killebrew, was moved from the outfield to first base. Interesting stuff. Thanks.
