Hundreds rally in protest of Redskins' name ahead of game against Minnesota Vikings

MINNEAPOLIS — Hundreds of American Indians and their supporters rallied outside the Metrodome Thursday night to demand the Washington Redskins change the team's nickname, calling it racist and disrespectful.

I suggest that the Star Tribune stop printing the offensive name of this team. From here on out, refer to it as the Washington NFL Team. Also, do not accept any ads that use either the name or the logo. Announce the policy on the editorial page and the sports pages. Encourage other print and video media to do the same.

Many readers brush off the issue because it received so little publicity until recently. Others downplay it because they resent the one advantage Native American tribes have nowadays: casinos. And still others pretend this is just another example of over-the-top political correctness. But the reality is that the moniker is at least as offensive to Native Americans as the "N" word is to African Americans and absolutely nothing can justify its continued use as an NFL team name.
