YES!!!! We got em! We got em! This will probably be the Twins most significant signing this year so we may as well enjoy.

Whew! For a minute I thought our fearless GM Terry Ryan might make a "qualifying offer" to Mike Pelfrey. Glad he knows how to save a buck. Now if he could just find Jim Hoey that ace reliever we got for JJ Hardy.....

Of course you don't make a qualifying offer to Pelfrey. I amy be alone here but I think they should still make a non qualifying offer for him. He came back from surgery way too quickly so 2013 was really a good rehab year for him. He started out very slow and got better each month before petering out in September. He gets up to 95 and has some pretty good stuff. Not an ace but he will be better than our average even if we do land someone else that is good. Johnson, Hughes, Pelfrey, Correia and Gibson would be a big improvement.

Pelfrey was terrible last season. He's not worth half of 14 million a year. Even when he was younger and healthy he gave up hits at a Blackburn-esque rate. Just say no to ALL sinker-ball pitchers who don't have a strikeout pitch no matter if they want 1 million or a hundred million!

I didn't even add in Alex Meyer. A staff like that could have some good upside and if in place I would worry a lot more about the offense. Of course upside is a little misleading. If they all fell flat then no one would remember that they had upside and just call them retreads and flops.

Guarantee Ryan signs someone even worse to replace Pelf.

I too hope they sign Pelfry. He had some good games this year and yes he can throw hard when needed. This was his first season after surgery and as such had a reasonable year. I see some upside to him once he is fully healthy. Sure he petered out in Sept. but that is to be expected your first year back from surgery.

I do not think they should re-sign Pelfrey. He wants a pay raise and he was terrible in '13. I understand he came back from surgery quickly, but look at his numbers with the Mets. He is, unlike Correia, capable of giving 200+ IP, but he is less than spectacular in doing so. A league average pitcher. The Twins do not need small increments of improvement, they need improvement to come in huge increments. Save the $5 million you'd spend on Pelfrey and use it to go toward signing a Johnson, Kazmier, or Haren. Of course, the Twins won't do that, but a team looking to actually improve would.

And why does the article announce the "news" that the Twins didn't offer Pelfrey a qualifying offer? No one in this or any other universe where baseball is played thought he would get one. I can't believe the Twins contemplated it even for a minute.

Let's see. Free agency starts in what? A week? Two weeks? That means the castoff players will be at the top of the board around mid-January, so I guess reading anything-Twins will have to wait until Terry Ryan lands one of those "big" fish.
