I visited the Union Depot a couple of weeks ago and the first thing I noticed was "Twin Waves". It's a captivating piece of art and makes a nice addition to the depot. Not knowing that this and other pieces of contemporary art were being added to the depot, my son commented on the ping pong table which looked kind of odd and out of place. Now we'll have to go back to see and listen to it. The Union Depot is a magnificent building and I'm so happy that it's been restored. I've been there twice and look forward to my next visit.

I'm all for giving artist opportunities to create cool installations but could we not find any local talent to design it? Just sayin'

I've have a "Minnesota Movement" at the old depot. I love those old buildings in St. Paul.

Union Depot is an incredibly beautiful building, filled with history like no other existing building we have in the state. The detractors have complained about the cost, but not only was it a gem worth saving, but transportation is changing, and that sturdy old building will be there, serving as a multi-modal transportation hub, long after all of us reading this are gone.

A fine example of our finite tax dollars at work. 1.25 million from the Federal Transit Administration to make the depot aesthetically pleasing is 1.25 million that will not be available to repair our roads and other infrastructure.

@gopher971, Actually, those federal dollars would NOT go to repair our roads and other infrastructure. Public art is part of accepting FTA funding. If not spent on this project, those dollars would have gone to other transit projects in other states. Union Depot's public art program has put $700,000 into projects by Minnesota artists.

I can't believe they didn't have a five-story Obama mural in there. Someone in the DFL really slipped up this time.

Nice if you're on the receiving end of a taxpayer handout. What a waste of money! LOL

Ironically, many of the people that support this artwork and the refurbishing of the depot are the same people that would be vilifying the original builder if he was alive today.

I love the building. Didn't need to add a bunch of expensive, goofy art to a already classically beautiful building. I love trains too as long as those using them pay for most of the cost to ride them not 20 cents on the dollar. Rode two TGV in London / France this fall and loved them.
