nessmess, are you saying if someone offered you a 3 year GUARANTEED contract for over 3 million dollars you'd say "no, I think I'll stay here and risk injury to myself instead." Please... the "stay in school" mantra is way overused. School will be there forever, a professional athletic contract is not!

Why would any team want a guy - no matter how talented - that has this many issues? If you are lucky you will get him to the point where he might be able to play home games. Royce needs to work on getting himself healthy and then see if he can work his way back.

jlove23 has it right. The window for a professional sports career is small, and I rarely blame any athletes for taking their shot. School will always be there, an opportunity to play pro sports won't. Now, as a fan of college sports, I'd like to see my favorite players stick around help the Gophers win rather than playing in the minors (see: many Gopher hockey players), but I'd probably do the same thing if I were in their shoes.

The reason to stay in school? How about money management. The majority of pro athletes are bankrupt a few years after playing.Every athlete should be required to study investments and banking instead of the cupcake classes they take now. What does a big contract do you if your broke within 2 to 3 years after your done playing.

Sadly, Royce White will never solve all of his problems and will never succeed in the NBA. But the reason I went to this story is reading a story in ESPN about Seantrel Henderson. He is having trouble at U of Miami for character issues. I think he was going to USC, but then transferred. So even though we would love to have talent like these two players at the U of M, you wonder if we are better off without them. It's great to get talent, but if the character is bad, they quickly become non-contributors.

The day will come when Royce will be full of regret for not doing more to overcome his disability. He still seems resentful that the NBA hasn't bent over backwards to accommodate him, but it seems to me he's doing very little himself to meet the NBA half-way. He could figure it ou
