Hartman: Claeys' faith in Gophers players is rewarded with victory

Not many Gophers football fans, nor media members, nor the Las Vegas sportsbooks who had Northwestern a double-digit favorite Saturday, believed the maroon and gold would beat the Wildcats for only the second time in seven meetings.

NW was not prepared emotionally, because dreams were ruined from that Ohio St loss. That loss will set them back 5 years. NW also w/o 2 or 3 key starters including their star RB, but Minn media will never spin you that angle....instead they will falsey spin UoMN getting better.

Hey Terry Ryan, did you notice that Boston, who lost 93 games last season, is going to the WS? Yeah they signed free agents and everything. Imagine that being able to build a WS team in part by signing FA. I firmly believe the Pohlads are more interested in recouping their investment in Target Field than they are in fielding a winner for their fans who are helping pay for said stadium.

Most NFL teams understand the importance of linebackers.

I was shocked yesterday. Leidner started the game, and in the first series, had wide open receivers and completed some passes. Then someone decided we needed to establish the run and Leidner made some bad choices (how's that lightweight safety working out for you, Mitch?). And I sat there thinking, if they bring in Nelson, he would have a big day. Surprise as some gopher coach came to the same conclusion! But, temper that again, with Leidner starting the second half and then the change again. And please, Galloway might know how to catch a football, but if the gophers would have followed his advice, we would have had an L instead of a W.

The North Carolina decision was very costly. Even if the gophers when have a lost to North Carolina, far from a certainty; having played them no doubt would have left the more prepared to start the season against Iowa. They still would have likely been 5-2, either by beating Iowa or beating North Carolina.

Its a nice win but Northwestern was without its two best offensive players so hardly an upset as Sid calls it. I think Sid still thinks they are going to the Rose Bowl this year.

A win is a win is a win. In most years the Gophers would have lost that game even with NW not having 3 players. But they won and only have to win ONE MORE GAME for a 2nd year in a row to go to a bowl game. This team IS GETTING BETTER and after another 3 years or so, they will win A LOT MORE BIG10 games. The coaching staffs and the AD are going to see all Gophers teams winning more games in all sports very soon. Right now the gals teams are on track. It's up to the guys to catch up.
