"Some nearby residents have voiced concern about the homes not fitting in with their larger, more expensive ones nearby..." Really? Be thankful you have a home and a yard. Let others be so blessed too.

If I were going to design a town/community it would have everything from large 4-5 single family homes to smaller 2 bedroom homes; duplexes, townhouses, apartment buildings - small and large - rental and private ownership homes. To me a community is a place where a person can be born and live through all of the stages of their life there. Presently when a child grows up and leaves home, eventually settles down raises a family (or not), upsizes to bigger house then downsizes again eventually to a townhouse or an apartment they have to move from community to community.
