lake Erie has zebra mussels and it has a great walleye population.

Lake Erie doesn't have spineless Governor like Minnesota who won't step in and do something with the Indians up there to stop the netting for 5 years. Businesses will go broke, no startups, no jobs, except that behemoth gambling den on 169. Good stewards of the earth and resources or just their pocket books?

Why not stock Perch, or create a safe zone in the lake somewhere? Perch eat zebra mussels and spiny fleas thus transfer to walleyes as prey. Fish farmers somes times sacrifice perch as food to raise walleyes in ponds, instead of minnows. Perhaps increasing/protecting the prey is in order. Perch limit to high? The missing link between mussels/fleas and walleyes?

For what it's worth, according to USGS study spiny fleas in lake Huron ate 78% of all zooplankton in the study sites. (Spiny water fleas invade Lake Huron) Andrew Keller

Would managing the resource for netting have anything to do with Lake Mille Lacs problems?

getcrazyOct. 14, 13 1:34 PM

Man with nine fish on a stringer points to another man with one fish in a net and says, "You guys are ruining the lake."

jeddeloh - The Governor can't step in and do anything about the netting. It is a Supreme Court ruling. Only the President can do something about it. getcrazy - don't you mean 2 fish on a stringer and 50,000 pounds in the net?

getcrazyOct. 14, 13 4:40 PM

@genericlogin- "getcrazy - don't you mean 2 fish on a stringer and 50,000 pounds in the net?"---The native Americans only took 10 percent of the haul last year. This is in the article. The rest was taken by another kind of fisher that thinks he is entitled to a full 100 percent and from a sovereign land to boot. I find it to be commentary on public affairs when Americans still think they own land that belongs to sovereign nation. A bigger commentary is the one where fishermen are so concerned about one lake and one fish when we have thousands of other lakes in this state the fishermen don't care about at all when it comes to the spreading of invasive species. All of the sudden they become instant environmentalists the moment they hear the words "Indian" and "Net". In all other enviornmental matters though (spilling gasoline into lakes, spreading invasive species, depletion of fish in other waters, ...) they could care less and will fight tooth and nail any and all regulation that keeps our lakes healthy and clean. It's all about them. It's not all of them but plenty enough of them to make the whole look bad. And they do look bad and they are costing the state millions dollars every year and taxpayers that don't fish have to clean up after them.

It's time to consider stocking this lake. Leech Lake has received more than 100,000 fry in recent years and is rebounding nicely.

getcrazy: "I find it to be commentary on public affairs when Americans still think they own land that belongs to sovereign nation.".......And yet these proud, "sovereign" nation's have no problem accepting our nations handouts in the form of highway funds for their reservations or the billions in tax dollars parceled out to their tribes by the BIA and their myriad of welfare programs.
