it's really a magic time of the year,we call it the golden season, the dramatic way everything changes,I have raised and hunted with Brittany's,excellent in the fields and woods and at home,I am training another one now,the best advice is patience and exercise for them and when it all comes together in a magic moment it's unforgettable and amazing, last wekend my new Brittany Daisy pointed and locked down 6 grouse at one time,a unbelievable stand off, totally amazing and beautiful,I was able to hit 3 of them and would have never found two of them if not for the dogs talents and instincts, they made a fabulous pot of wid rice soup,Mmmmm, going again very soon...

just to add a note to last coment, that is the best hunting we have done together in 2 years, many walks without a shot, always bird sign and a few flushes, always trying to get her and myself into the right position, working on her interest level up which happens with experience and maturity, then some nice points and I did miss a few along the way and enjoyed it all very much, now getting that that perfect situation of scent-point-flush-shot and a wonderful gift of nature, much high praise for my hunter Daisy and of course she gets a few bowls of grouse & wild rice soup (I always make a deal with my dogs)and memories forever...

When hunting upland birds, I prefer Brittany, or English Setters. I started with the Brittany and then was introduced to English Setter. The English Setter is a hunter. Both flush and point. For Duck or Goose nothing beats a Labrador Retriever.

I've hunted with Labs, Springers, Shorthairs, English Setters, etc. I have a Wire Haired Pointing Griffon now...smartest dog I've ever had. Didn't need to be trained to hunt, points...retrieves...put 50 birds in the freezer the first season I hunted with her...when she was 8 months. On top of that she is a great house dog...

No matter what breed one prefers, the best hunting dogs are also family/house dogs and companions. Hunting season is only a few months long. When I was young, a friend of mine kept his professionaly trained "hunting" dog in a pen most of the year. It was no surprise that when both of our dogs would hunt with us, his would misbehave, run off and not obey. I really felt sorry for that dog and could tell he was lonely and depressed.

What ever your favorite breed is, the key is finding one that hasn't been spoiled by the show breeders.

The opening sentence was right, but the remainder of the article was the typical baloney because you forgot Golden Retrievers. Someday the rest of you will get it right! Have a good and safe hunt everyone!

I hunt with Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. For some reason they think the meatloaf sandwiches and jerky that I pack for lunch belongs to them.
