Frugality on verge of fracturing couple

Dear Carolyn: I was taught by my parents to live frugally, which meant never using more than I needed. I would re-use clothes and keep a car until it practically fell apart. We always lived comfortably as a family but it was definitely a test of limits because our space was only as much as we needed.

She's a complete pain. She sounds like she's preparing her family for some sort of post-apocalyptic world. Her grandparents likely grew up in the Depression and she's applying those values to today. There's nothing wrong with living comfortably and teaching your kids to be independent, generous people who care about society and all of the people living in it. We did it with our kids and we are very proud of them.

I agree she is a pain. a major league pain. She should be lucky to have a partner who can by what he wants and still be helpful to others. I like the fact she wants it her way cause her parents lived life better. I doubt. i bet they wished they could afford to by a bigger house. This guy should run away from her fast and not look back.

Must be rough being able to afford a nice home. Wouldn't want to overburden your conscience or anything.

Marriage is all about compromise. When my husband and I were first married and shopping for our first home we each had our list of “must haves” we found a house that we were both happy with that was within our budget. If they can afford it and he is not putting them on the brink of financial collapse, let him get what he wants.
