Sunday NFL Insider: Surprises, disappointments at the quarter mark

Now that the Browns have spent the past three weeks spoon-feeding us crow-flavored reminders that nothing in the NFL is ever completely as it appears, let’s look back on the first quarter of the 2013 NFL season. Gosh knows looking ahead doesn’t work in this league.

Disappointing that Wilf didn't fire Spielman. Hopefully he'll do that before the 2014 draft. When you whiff on a high first round QB pick you should get the AX!

About eight years ago I figured out the NFL. Turns out you know nothing until five games have been played. The NFL has so much change via free agency, and injuries predictions are just futile. Unless Peyton Manning is on you team. Or Tom Brady. Otherwise things change so much season to season, any speculation, or prediction is based on nothing. Eli Manning has won two Super Bowls and his team is 0-4. And he is a pretty good qb.

partskcoj, I agreed with you on the fire Spielman thing, but anyone can whiff on a QB. It just doesn't take them 2+ seasons to realize it. What gripes me is that he could have had Ponder in the 2nd round, but he had to try to be clever (and still does). We could have had serious help with a good first round pick, and still suffered through the Ponder debacle. I wonder if he is still insisting that Ponder was the most "pro ready" QB in the draft?

There was a time, perhaps 20-25 years ago when the league performed pretty much as expected. Not anymore, and it keeps getting more unpredictable and dramatic every year. The games are rigged. Period.
