BUENA VISTA, Colo. — A 13-year-old girl said her father shielded her as boulders crashed down on them on a Colorado hiking trail — an action that authorities say probably saved her life even as her father and four other family members were killed.

This sounds terrible, but what were they doing hiking out there after all that rain? Landslides are not unexpected events after heavy rains, and much of Colorado has been hammered. I applaud the Dad's actions in saving the child, but caution has to be exercised when one goes out into the hills.

The father is a hero in my book. Prayers for the little girl and her family.

My heart goes out to the surviving girl; what a tragedy. But don't close the trail! That part of the hill that dislodged is now stable. Get the Colorado School of Mines to do a study -- a memorial -- on that trail; a limited study wouldn't be prohibitively expensive.
