Rand: Twins' finish feels familiar? Well, yes and no

  • Article by: MICHAEL RAND , Star Tribune

This season felt so much like last season for the Twins, right down to the identical 66-96 record both versions wound up having. But in breaking down the numbers, that’s only partly true. In some ways the teams were eerily similar, and in some ways, they were quite different. Here are three from each category:

Another difference was that Cuddy won the National League batting title. That's OK though. We didn't need him.

The bottom-line is that The Twins need to follow the recent success stories within their division (KC, CLE)and start spending money. The Royals became relevant this season by ramping up payroll thusly over the past 4 years: $74M, $38M, $64M, $82M (2013). Similarly, Cleveland's past four years look like this: $61M, $49M, $65M, $81M (2013). The Twins, meanwhile, have done this: $97M, $113M, $100M, $82M (2013). So, it seems like the ticket to competitiveness is to get up to that magic $80M payroll mark . . . er . . . wait. Nevermind.

I see no reason to think that next year will be any different. To me, if we are going to lose this many games, just bring up the prospects and let them take their lumps and learn.
