Sid Hartman: Many Vikings stars step up in England

Most notably, though, a defense that was having trouble with Ben Roethlisberger made a play at the end.

No. We are the anti-LOSING fans. Did you conveniently forget that Ponder LOST the Cleveland game by not making an easy sideline pass to Jennings?! But that's ok Sid, you will come around soon enough. You must have purchased a Ponder jersey or something and don't want it to go to waste... The Vikings were 3 point underdogs, and thanks in great part to Cassel, were up by 17!! I guess maybe some folks are just anti-winning...

C'mon Sid, This will be Adelman's 3rd season, not 2nd.

The defense really didn't come through. They got lucky on a sack and fumble at the end. Jeez, they drove right down the field as if no one cared. I've already written off the season, so I don't care what the Vikings do, but Ponder is at best a mediocre back up qb. If he was on another team, what would you trade to get him on yours?? A fourth or fifth round draft choice at best?? Spielman screwed this up by reaching for him in the draft. Chris Cook??? horrible. Our drafting has not been great. I will say I'd much rather see Cassell be the starter for the rest of the year. A qb who can read a defense?? What a concept. Make a few passes to keep them honest, and it opens it up for AP. No matter who our qb is, we are 5-11 at best this year. Probably 4-10. Anyway, I thought the d would blow it again, but they got lucky on 1 play. God they are atrocious. What happens when we play Rodgers, Manning, Brady, and even Stafford. THey will light us up.

Not much love for Cassel in this article chiding the quarterback experts and blaming the defense for the prior losses. Yes, the experts take issue with Ponder turning the ball over seven times while posting a 65.9 passer rating that ranks 30th in the league in three straight losses. The big stars came through because Cassel decimated the eight men in the box game plan with his 123 passer rating, opening up Peterson running lanes and finally getting the ball to our $9 million/year receiver.

Sid are you forgetting two key points in your column. 1st. ponder was drafted in 2011 not in 2012. This is Adelman's 3rd. Year as head coach of the Timberwolves.

Sid you mention Jennings finally came through. I wonder why? No link to the QB? The only reason the defense had to step up is because both Cassel and Ponder have to deal with coaching staff that is clueless. Push the ball all day with success and then the last two times they get the ball pray the clock runs out. Its hard for you to keep defending Ponder but even harder to defend Frazier

It's really quite simple. Sid needs to keep his "special relationship" with the Vikings organization intact. Rick Spielman runs the organization. Ponder is Spielman's boy. So Sid excuses Ponder's blunders and downplays Cassel's good play.

Sid People are not anti Ponder, but rather anti his play. Fans don't care who plays, just that they seem competent. Unfortunately Ponder makes too many mistakes. What should be done is the QB that gives the team the best chance to win should play. Currently that looks like it should be Cassell. But, unless the defense plays better it won't matter.

I think it was a conspiracy... The O-line decided not to try hard until there was a different QB.
