Reusse: Bob McNamara a staple in Gophers-Iowa football lore

  • Article by: PATRICK REUSSE , Star Tribune

There was a Twin Cities radio show in the 1980s that went by “Monday Night Sports Talk” that included a degree of irreverence. A popular item was the Sid Rules, which promoted the idea that if listeners followed a list of 15 rules they could write a reasonable version of a Sid Hartman column.

I like our chances too. Thanks for the nice reminiscence. Most of us near your age remember parts of the McNamara stories, but it was great to ave your article.

It was a beautiful Fall day and I listened to it on the radio. Iowa had a long touchdown run called back by a penalty. What a game.

He is a class act. It's hard to understand all of the hoopla over the Vikings when you have this sort of legacy and more to come. Great article Patrick.

Wonderful story Pat! I was a 12 year old Hawkeye fan living in Sheldon Iowa, never forget how 'sad' I was!Makes me sad to see the way Minnesota quit following their home state team over a bunch of pro football players, sat on their hands when Memorial Stadium was torn down. Pat ask anyone who Bruce Smith is 50 or younger{you'll be shocked}And before you remind me Iowa is the only 'show in town'-Michigan has 2 Big 10 schools and the Lions, think Penn State, think Indiana, think Illinois, think Purdue.Shame on you!

Truly, I'm glad to have lived during the era when Gopher football was the only game that mattered...

Great stuff! I was a teenager living in Southern Minnesota at the time, just a few years away from starting at the U ... I'll never forget listening to the exploits of Paul Giel, Bob and Pink McNamara and others on Saturday afternoons. Those were truly golden years, Thanks for the memories!
