No Congress before this one has ever, ever, in history been irresponsible enough to threaten default, to threaten an economic shutdown, to suggest America not pay its bills, just to try to blackmail a president into giving them some concessions--------That is because No president in the history of the USA has refused to negotiate during debt ceiling discussions. Only Obama would rather send the country into termoil rather than give ONE INCH!

All historical precedent and the hiccups with ObamaCare suggest the Republicans are poised for a big year in the 2014 midterms.....but if they can't control themselves from another nailbiter debt ceiling fight that earns us another credit downgrade, they're gonna face another 2012 next year.

" Only Obama would rather send the country into termoil rather than give ONE INCH!" .... just exactly what is he supposed to negotiate when the Republican's demand repeal of the ACA?

“No Congress before this one has ever, ever, in history been irresponsible enough to threaten default, to threaten an economic shutdown, to suggest America not pay its bills".......A government shutdown would not result in a default on our debts. This is just another myth brought to us by the left. It would only affect discretionary spending not SS, military or Medicare. Bond holders would also receive what is owed to them. Raising the debt ceiling and creating additional debt is the more expensive option. It will end up raising our borrowing costs and result in the further debasing of our currency.

Really what the senate should do is attach amendments to end all fossil fuel subsidies, slash defense spending, restore the estate tax to pre-Dubya levels, remove tax deductions for vacation homes, offer free tuition to children of all families with incomes under $75k, force hedge fund managers to declare their income as regular income, and insert language that bans assault weapons, limits magazine capacity, and requires 30 waiting periods after local law enforcement approves weapon sales. If the teapubs feign outrage, accuse them of refusing to negotiate

"A government shutdown would not result in a default on our debts" -- it could accelerate the default date, which is right around the corner... I can't imagine anyone with even a modicum of mental capacity would even consider a default

"Raising the debt ceiling .. will end up raising our borrowing costs". No, that's what happens when you default on your debts as the Republican's want to do.

joe, why should the president negotiate with a congress that refuses to pay the bills that they themselves approved? And spin it all you want, but if the government shuts down, everyone knows who did it ...and it ain't Obama. Even the guys over at Redstate have figured that one out.

The regressives are the biggest threat to this country, not Terrorist. They would rather see the destruction of this country then see Obama get what has already passed into law. They don't believe in the constitutional government anymore , It's the law of the country, they don't care, get Obama ! the Regressive hate machine marches on. Now when this country defaults, do the regressives all get together, like after the House debate and High five each other and pat each other on the back. How do Americans celebrate the collapse of America! The only satisfaction I'm getting out of this is knowing that this is going to cost regressives big at the voting booth. They so need to be dumped for the sake of this country.

Another stunning political misscalculation, brought to you by the "political terrorists" of the GOP. I really hope the more sensible members of that party can manage to redirect...so much depends upon it.
