Amazon unveils faster, pricier Kindle Fires to take on Apple

The prices are lower than Apple’s latest iPads but more expensive than the older Kindle Fire HD.

Maybe I missed it, but it's not clear to me what the new Kindle can do. My wife bought we one a couple of years ago and it was a dumbed down iPad that could only display eBooks. The new one can apparently also play eMovies. I took it back. Now I have an iPad, which is a tablet computer. I can read eBooks and watch movies on it, but it does so much more.

I am not a fan of any computer which has proprietary architecture. It is why you will never see an SD card or a standard USB socket on any iPad or Kindle or Nook product. The units have a micro-USB port so you can charge the unit or sync it with a PC. It is not meant for external storage. I would find it difficult to pay a couple hundred dollars on a unit so I can read a book.
