This article is close to situation but there is more details missing. Back in the Fall of 2011 a Facilities Task Force was setup and met for almost year, to recommend the best course of action for the district's facilities. Shakopee had a different superintendent and different makeup of the school board; at that time. The Facilities Task Force was made up of parents, teachers, board members and professionals. They recommended a second high school and a re-configurations to occur in specific time lines, short range, mid and long range. The school board accepted these recommendations and the district implemented a phase. A sixth grade center to be used temporarily. Configuring two junior high buildings (7-9) and all elementaries are (K-5) for a specified time frame. The recommendation for the second high school was build the exact same building, changing the brick color, etc.; just like they have been doing with the elementary school buildings since Sun Path. The new board and superintendent have decided to waste time and money reexamining what the previous school board accepted from the FTF's recommendations. They found it's the same solution. The district needs the second high school, build the same one as the last one and stop wasting time and money on additional studies. The district has been working on this longer than 12 months that the article states. If the elementary building are at capacity and the junior highs are close...where are you going to put the students in the high school (which is almost at capacity) when the grades move up? The more time is wasted the construction costs go up. The referendum was delayed. Don't redesign the second building, just use the current high school plans. The new building will be located approx. one mile south of the current high school. The next concern is the future with the athletic facilities -- the high school stadium is located at the West Junior High -- too much sharing between all of the secondary schools.
