Apple's sales of latest iPhones hit 9 million units in opening 3 days, topping expectations

SAN FRANCISCO — Gadget lovers still can't resist the iPhone's seductive call, even amid a bevy of enticing lower-priced alternatives that offer similar features.

My girlfriend went looking for one of the gold phones and couldn't find any at three stores she checked out. And it's not that they were sold out: Apple never shipped any to those stores.

She finally ordered one online along with Applecare. The phone will be billed as soon as it ships, but they charged her for Applecare as soon as the order was placed. When she called to complain she got some run-around about how it's there in case she has a problem with her phone. So she told them she has a problem: it won't turn on. Why? Because I don't have the phone yet!

She finally got them to defer the charge until the phone arrives.

If you use them enough and can't be separated from the interweb a single minute - I guess they're worth the high cost...

Makes you wonder how bad the economy really is if that many people can drop $200 for a phone with very little to add from the previous model a year ago. I like my iPhone 5 but plan on keeping it for at least another two years or something really groundbreaking is added (which ever comes last).
