I trust you were using lead free shot.

kayknapp - that has been a statewide waterfowl requirement for quite some time.

All shot should be lead free. The fact that it is not makes as much sense as killing wolves for fun.

Whenever I read an article similar to this, the common theme is "there aren't as many ducks as they're used to be." I don't want to oversimplify the problem, but is it possible that a relationship exists between fewer ducks and the fact that you guys shoot and kill thousands of them every year?

I saw maybe a quarter the amount of ducks I saw only two years ago. One of the worst openers I can remember at least in the past decade. I think part of the problem is that these marshes, swamps, and ponds don't have as much water as they used to, thus there's not as much habitat.

The drying up and tilling under of prarie potholes along with the fringe habitat is one of the main reasons for the decline in duck numbers since the 70's. Hunters have very little impact on the duck population in comparison to loss of nesting habitat. A good read is "On the Wings of a North Wind a Journey with Waterfowl" talks about this extensively.

We also saw fewer ducks this year. Surprisingly, we saw no teal. I've never had that happen before. We hunted South of the metro area this year and it rained almost everyday through June with late snowstorms and quite a bit of flooding a few times. I saw very few successful nests and I think that was the biggest problem. Nonetheless, it was a beautiful weekend. I plan to put together a couple dozen wood duck houses this winter and hope for better weather next Spring.

First minnesota open for me in five years. Thought I would try it with such an early date and get some teal. Only saw two flocks of teal and got a few woodies. Very very poor to say the least.Probably will just stick with the later season and Dakota trips as I have in the past.

A great opener for me in grant county. Limited both Saturday and Sunday in about one hour, teal and woodies. Didn't shoot any mallards, but they were numerous. Hey Dennis, that woodie the eagle grabbed? You have to count it in your limit. It is part of your 'take' according to the Feds. So are birds downed but not found.
