Souhan: Run-first Leidner starting to look like ... Tundra Tebow?

  • Article by: JIM SOUHAN , Star Tribune
  • Updated: September 22, 2013 - 12:29 AM

In his first start, redshirt freshman Mitch Leidner rushed for 151 yards, scored four touchdowns and led the Gopher football team to its most significant victory of the box-of-chocolates portion of the college football season.

Before all the "small school" comments show up, San Jose State has over 30,000 students.

Let's slow down on Leidner. I was very encouraged by his debut but as Souhan himself alludes to, it might well be a different story against Big Ten opponents (even Iowa).

Run the darn ball Stop the darn run Win a few ball games. If you don't HAVE to should NEVER pass. Now, just let the Gophers and hawgeyes line up and play each other and we will see who will win the first Conference Game for both teams. And the game is for the trophy. They have to play the game before anyone has a clue what the final score will be. It is a GREAT old rivalry! Go Gophers... ; 0 )

Jim, this a quote from this article that you wrote. "Last year, Kill removed Nelson’s redshirt to press him into duty. That seemed like a strange move at the time, sacrificing a year of eligibility for a talented quarterback in a rebuilding program." So I ask the question, is Nelson a talented QB if he can't effectively throw the football? For this team to win in the Big 10 he has to be able to throw for at least 250 yrds per game........I don't see it.

Glad to see you've retained your knack for apt statistical comparisons, Jim. Wow - 4 TDs vs 5 completions; last week's column brilliant stat was seizures versus Big Ten wins, wasn't it? I guess boring and bland column beats boorish and bullying, anyway.

I hope the Vikings draft David Fales.

College offenses that never pass are.... high school offenses. They did what they had to do yesterday, but.. bored with it.

Did you see the "CAN SOUHAN" sign at the game, Jim? Hope so.

You need great line play to run like that. I was most impressed by the strength of our lines, a great improvement in the past two years.
