Hartman: 4-0 start brings optimism to Gophers

  • Article by: SID HARTMAN , Star Tribune

You would have to go back to when Glen Mason was coach to find a time when the state will be as excited about a Gophers football game as it will be for the home contest with Iowa next weekend.

For those that are complaining that the Gophers are 4-0 only because they have played a weak schedule, keep in mind that in the past they would have lost many of these games, as well.

Sid,your doing it again--the Gophers have played as Kill planned 4 patsies, they have beaten no one! The game is a sell out because half the stadium will be Iowa fans. Sid I work with a large group of men that are football fans and come Monday hardly a one will know they won. The only reason they will notice next week is because I'm from Iowa!!

Nobody is complaining that the team is 4-0. People are just making the observation that this team would not be 4-0 against some "real" opponents. The offensive coaches might want to be careful about the running QB stuff. That many rushing attempts will get multiple QBs killed over the course of 8 Big Ten games. Also, after watching this team in person today, this team is 2-6 in Big Ten play...at best. You know, like last year, and the year before that, and 2 years before that. 2-6 in the Big Ten is pretty much a staple of the Jerry Kill era.

Kinnick ... just a brief refresher for you ... San Jose State was 11-2 last year.

Nothing against Leidner, but until he can pass for 175 yards and run for 75 yards in one game, I think we still don't know who is going to develope into the #1 QB and beat Big Ten teams.

Normally I am pretty cynical about the Gophers. But this year I am excited. They seem to be getting it together and turning things around. Go Gophers.

kinnickSep. 21, 13 8:10 PM

dlfriesen--I could have sworn the Gopher's played them today not in 2012!c'on you can do better than that!

Nicknack: how did that NIU game turn out? You were playing against Jerry's kids. Wait until Kill has 4 year's of recruiting.

kinnickSep. 21, 13 8:47 PM

Jerry's kid's?? NIU lost 2 games last year and one was to Iowa. This years team could hardly be called 'Jerry's'kids as he's been gone 3 years. Do your homework hopsing!

I'll get excited if they beat Iowa convincingly, which they should at home. Can't tell how good or bad this team is yet given the poor level of competition.
