Reusse: Ponder found his rhythm in Chicago, then the rug was pulled

There was a chance for Christian Ponder to start redefining himself as the Vikings’ quarterback near the end of Sunday’s game in Chicago. It took a stubborn effort from Bill Musgrave, Ponder’s offensive coordinator, to make certain that this wasn’t going to happen.

In that situation, the Vikings played not to lose rather than playing to win and it cost them. After the pick six Ponder played fairly well.

Musgrave is clearly the weak link on this Vikings staff. Almost as conservative as...gasp......Chili.

Ruesse is wrong more often than not...but this time he got it right. Ponder didn't lose the game Sunday, the coaches did. I have been critical of Ponder almost from the beginning, but it is make or break time. Force him to turn it loose and see what happens. The Vikings should come out gunning on Sunday. There is nothing to lose and something potentially to prove. Either Ponder is the QB next year or not. No Super Bowl this year regardless. Let it rip and see what happens.

Patrick may be correct but you know darn well had Ponder rolled right and was sacked, stopped, fumbled or threw an incompletion or interception Patrick would be questioning why the brain trust didn't give the ball to the games best runner.

Before watching that third down play, I told my grandson that this was the deciding play of the game. I am no football genius, but I must know more than some coaches. Frazier is Okay with gambling on fourth down, but not throwing the ball when a touchdown is badly needed? The Vikings couldn't stop the Bears all day. Were they expecting yet another turnover by the Bears for the win?

I'll give Ponder this, he did look better in the second half. He does show toughness when he runs. He wants to succeed. In a way he reminds me of Joe Kapp. Not the best arm but had some grit. Hopefully he will advance to the next level of competence.

I do agree though with others, the Vikings were playing not to lose. Musgrave needs to be less predictable. Would sure like to see Patterson and Webb being used more, both could be explosive if used properly. Come on Musgrave!

Vanvader, third and goal from the 4. Run blocking sends the entire defense into the fray, pass blocking allows for a pass or a run. Seems like a no brainer to me.

Fire Frazier, Musgrave and the Def Coord (after the debacle of the last drive in Chicago) and bring is people who understand that using the talent they have is how you win in the NFL. These guys are an embarrassment to Minnesota. Of course the Vikings ain't never won the big one and all the owners care about is money. Our money. Taxpayer money to enrich themselves.

On ESPN QB rating, Ponder is better than RG3, Roethlisberger and Freeman. I thing Rick Spielman is running the ESPN these days. Vikings should start QB MBT this week against Browns.
