Hartman: Gophers must tighten up their pass defense

  • Article by: SID HARTMAN , Star Tribune

Knowing Jerry Kill, he likely arrived with the Gophers football team about 3 a.m. Sunday morning and immediately headed for his office at the Bierman Building, where after viewing the film of a 44-21 victory at New Mexico State, he found a lot of things he wasn’t happy about despite the one-sided score, especially in the Gophers pass defense.

Who do the Goofers play next week? Probably The Little Sisters Of The Poor.

It's good to see The U and Sanford were engaged in good old Pay to Play. Who doesn't love corruption? Also, what does it say about Kaler and Teague if they consent to things like this?

The first real test of Coach Jer's charges will be against San Jose State. As such, it will be interesting to see how they do when not facing yet another East Overshoe Tech, to pile up "wins" prior to conference play where wins will be few and far between so as to become bowl eligible. Two or three wins against legitimate D-I teams in conference play will be hard to come. Wins against Iowa, Indiana (not a for sure deal) and possibly Michigan State, will be about as much as one can expect from Coach Jer this season. Fans will then be able to tell whether his charges have made any progress over last year but not before then. As a Gopher fan of 65+ years, I certainly hope that they do but a 2-6 or 3-5 record in conference play appears to be the most that we should expect this year.

If the pass coverage is poor against poor non conference teams can you imagine what a nightmare it's gonna be when we start B1G play? The last 40 years has been like a broken record. When 2 star recruits are going against 4 and 5 star recruits it ain't pretty. Like the 8th graders playing the seniors.
