Thousands of Minnesota kids take to the marshes for waterfowl hunt

Eleven-year-old Grace Rodemann, cradling her 20-gauge shotgun, scanned the clear morning sky for ducks Saturday on a dank, mosquito-laden marsh near the Minnesota River — her first-ever hunt.

When I began duck hunting in the early '70's, I went on opening day along with everybody else. The fact that there were other hunters afield didn't deter me one bit. That first year all I got was one blue-winged teal and I couldn't have been happier. Why are kids today so much different that they have to have their own opener to keep them interested?

(DNR's Johnson said): “Over the past decade, we’ve tried to do everything we can to make it as easy as possible for a person to start hunting,’’ he said. ---- Have you tried giving away guns for free? Or, TV commercials showing 10 year old kids killing birds with guns? Marketing 101! The NRA would gladly help out.

I'm surprised a bunch of teaches did stage a protest. Do you know how hot it was today!?

Drove past a WPA today that was full of ducks yesterday. I know kids hunted there today. WPA was devoid of ducks. Private pond 2 miles down the road had literaly thousands more ducks on it today. I have a difficult time accepting the notion that youth day doesn't negatively effect opening day for those of us who pay and have paid for decades to hunt. My 2 kids will accompany their grandpa and I on opening day, just like I did when I was a kid.

Urban dwellers must think that organic ground chicken ends up on their plate by magic. The license fees duck hunters pay for, State and Federal duck stamps along with groups like Ducks Unlimited do more to maintain wetlands for ducks than their detractors who do nothing. Hunting as a youngster taught me responsibility, a zest for the outdoors, discipline when hunting and that food doesn't just show up on my plate with no effort. Then again with the large segment of folks who get food stamps perhaps it doesn't take much effort after all.

I can just hear the silly-sanctimonious Liberals: "Oh noes, children aren't responsible enough to be around bad-evil-nasty guns! They will *surely* now grow into serial killers! Send in Child Protection and put those parents in jail!" (sarcasm)

You people need to get over yourselves. Whining that kids get to hunt one day, two weeks prior to the opener, is totally selfish! You've been able to goose hunt now for weeks with a ten per day bag limit. The ducks won't fly away as a result of one day. As for teachers staging a protest. Really?? What does that have to do with the youth opener? Maybe you should have taken school serious enough to spell correctly!

angryteacher - It isn't about being "selfish", it's about having a level playing field for all. Why are duck hunters singled out? Why isn't there a youth pheasant opener or youth deer opener if they're worried about them taking up the sport? I've lived next to a WPA my entire life and I can stand in my yard in the evenings and listen to the different sounds of the waterfowl all spring and summer and after there's been a youth opener, it's all quiet and the water is like glass.

Something else that can be taught on YW day: wear your lifejacket; don't just sit on it.
