ATLANTA — After falling four years in a row, U.S. births may finally be leveling off.

With wages, benefits, and job security all at an all-time low and the cost of educating children soaring at about five times the rate of inflation, having children seems like the perfect recipe for most people to destroy their lives. Low fertility is yet another side effect of the winner-take-all economy. Unless the richest 1% starts cranking out 20 kids per family or whatever it takes to match the population replacement rate, the entire species faces extermination as a consequence of the wealthy gobbling up every morsel of economic growth.
