Angela Hermann to make history calling races at Canterbury Park

  • Article by: RACHEL BLOUNT , Star Tribune
  • Updated: September 6, 2013 - 12:10 AM

No matter how hard she tried, Angela Hermann always seemed to wake her mother, Mary, on those frequent nights when she sneaked out of bed. Not even the fear of parental wrath could keep the 11-year-old away from the TV for the late-night show recapping the horse races at Canterbury Park. ¶ It was, Hermann admits, a strange obsession for a preteen girl. Unlike so many youthful flirtations, it only got stronger — which led her to an even more unusual place. Saturday, Hermann will call eight races at Canterbury, becoming the first woman in North America to announce a full thoroughbred race card.

Less Paul Allen is never a bad thing.

No kidding . . . his voice is annoying . . . cheesy and unlistenable . . . sadly.

ARRey asks? Can she do radio? She should take Allen's regular nine-to-noon slot too. Surely she could also do Vikes broadcasts. Horses are horses.

Congratulations to Angela: she's capable, sports a solid horse acumen, and I've no doubt she'll do well on Saturday. Nice to see that Canterbury is betting on a filly!

As a Canterbury regular, I am disappointed. I like Angela alot as a handicapper, but she is not a race caller. Even while she is calling a race, it's clear she doesn't want to be doing it. And, women are not race callers! Unless he has left for the season, why don't you have Richard Grunder in the booth? How about Gorg? Come on Jeff M, you can do better than this for the fans! I'll be playing some other track tomorrow....

While I will always prefer a male voice calling the races, I admit Angela was fabulous! She was fun to listen to, and she handled a difficult situation like a pro. Well done young lady!
