Welcome to the new year.
Maybe it's time to de-emphasize the whole concept of retirement. While most people won't have enough resources to come anywhere near the popular fantasies of Caribbean beaches and cruising on the Rhine, I have also seen a small but significant number who scrimped and denied themselves their whole lives in pursuit of a retirement that probably won't be what they expected. I personally know people in their fifties who have never bought an airline ticket, but imagine that they are going to travel the world starting on the magical day they retire. I have a defined benefit pension, deferred compensation, and of course Social Security but I plan to keep working full time with no planned date of "retirement" (and enjoying my vacations) until it's just not feasible to continue.
