Bowing to metro leaders, Met Council pushes back LRT action

Met Council pushed back Southwest light-rail route decision after city and county leaders said they needed more time to weigh options.

For the record. The freight trains and Light Rail will be going through St. Louis Park and Minneapolis regardless of the vote. Each community is asking for where the trains go through. Don't yell NIMBY, because it is already in both of our yards. SLP doesn't want a new rail line established tearing out homes, businesses and a school playground. Minneapolis doesn't want freight and light rail in a rail corridor because it will displace 200 yards of bike trail. AND the best route is through the Greenway and up Nicollet Ave which would be a win-win for Minneapolis and St. Louis Park. Not only is the Greenway designed for rail traffic, it also has the destinations and residential density to significantly support the line. I just wanted to send my thoughts to the MET Council which I have lost complete faith in its ability to govern.

It is incredible that this seemingly never-ending discussion about where to route LRT and/or freight rail traffic exists because Minneapolis doesn't want this traffic to disrupt a BICYCLE TRAIL. Earth to Minneapolis: the corridor of land this argument is about has been a RAIL corridor since BEFORE ANY OF US were ever even born. It originally carried the traffic of TWO separate RR's. At it's peak, it saw dozens of trains per day. Now, because you don't want any disruption of your precious little bike trail, the citizens of this state and country are supposed to spend HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of dollars more?? Are you kidding me?!

This is a no brainier once you peel back neighborhood interests. You go with the lowest cost solution, which is rail/trail/LRT combo all in the kenilworth corridor. It can be done through reducing set backs between the three pieces in the short stretch, and there are plenty of examples of nearly adjacent rails and trails out there. Aesthetically that would also be much less intrusive than the massive ditch walls needed for the shallow tunnel. I find it difficult to believe that minneapolis seriously believes that the rail/trail/LRT combo is significantly worse than the trail/LRT combo. I find it even more difficult to believe that Minneapolis is willing to kill the LRT based on that perceived difference. It is time to call their bluff.

Things are sometimes not what they seem to be. This is not about a bike trail as whalesmn states. It's about residents of Minneapolis who live near the Kenilworth rail corridor, wanting to keep light rail out of their neighborhood, and who are using the bike trail to accomplish that. I'm a bicyclist who uses that trail 20 or thirty times a year and it could be easily be rerouted along a short portion of its length (most of its length, there is plenty of room for the bike trail, freight trains, and light rail to coexist). Bicyclists like me, who are the vast majority of the trail users, would be happy with just about any alternate route through or near the current Kenilworth rail corridor. Hennepin County managed to squeeze two heavy rail lines (the North Star), a very busy freight line, and a bike trail under a part of the Twins stadium in downtown Minneapolis. And there are many other places in the metro where bike trails are scrunched in with other uses for short distances and I have yet to hear a bicyclist complain about these accommodations. The Kenilworth corridor is just a means for bicyclists to travel. It is not a pristine wilderness experience. Provide an alternate route for the bike trail where necessary and save 300 to 400 million dollars for real metro needs.

Although it will mean nothing to the folks pushing this, most people by a wide margin do not want money spent here. So much money for so few. Fix our roads and bridges first!

The short-sightedness of some like whalemn isn't surprising. What is surprising is that the same folks can't seem to admit that the bike trails in MPLS have gotten the city much national attention, the Midtown Greenway was just voted the best bike path in the US, and this is a major corridor for commuting to work. The big businesses know that these sorts of amenities are what attract young, smart, capable workers to the Twin Cities. You don't attract business and a workforce to a city by tearing up selling points like bike paths. So, yeah, let's just stick freight and LRT back in there and heck, maybe a strip mall too.

Mr Doyle ~ How about mentioning the fact that the proposed rerouted freight traffic through SLP would have it's own little pinch point; like the fact it would disrupt and endanger approximately 2500 SLP students by passing within 35 feet of an elementary school property on one side and a high school stadium on the other. Also that it would NOT run through a rail corridor, rather it would run through back yards of SLP residents. Here is a suggestion. Bring a photographer along with you and take some snapshots of the proposed reroute area. I'd like to see that in your article. You seem a little infatuated with the bike trail. I haven't seen one photo in the Strib of the people whose lives would be impacted by this proposed reroute in SLP.

The best route is through the Greenway and up Nicollet Ave which is where the people are. If this is not acceptable, put all three through Kennilworth at grade as is done in so many places across the country WITHOUT problems arising.
