Yahoo's Marissa Mayer's challenge

I worked for Google as a software engineer from 2003 to 2008. I never worked directly with Marissa Mayer (and I didn’t know her socially either), but I saw enough to know that she was very driven and had a firm vision of what she wanted, worked out in the finest detail.

Combined with a "background in product development" and a Steve Jobs-like ability to make "the tech as user-friendly and seamless as possible," one would expect the unauthorized biography of such a successful manager to be effusively positive. What do you suppose went wrong....

Yahoo did beat out Google this month in website visits...the odd thing is that no one can explain it with the obvious reason...fantasy football!

(article quote describing Mayer): "This makes her (Mayer) far more of an outsider to business culture than women like Carly Fiorina and Meg Whitman." ---- That is not good news. Fiorina was a total disaster. When Fiorina merged Compaq with HP during the dot-com era, I needed to learn of her credentials to get an idea of where a person like her would likely take the "merged operation," and Fiorina's credentials were as follows: "BA in philosophy and medieval history. Summertime hair salon and secretary work. Law school but quit after one semester. Took a receptionist job at a firm and somehow became a broker for that firm. A masters degreee in marketing in 1980 and a master of science in management (ie general management courses) in 1989." In other words, she possessed ZERO understanding of technology and we went with a different technology vendor ASAP. If Mayer is considered an "outsider to the business culture" even more so than Fiorina, that is quite unfortunate.

Mayer's not at all like Fiorina, who you note "possessed ZERO understanding of technology." What makes Mayer an outsider is that she's not a "corporate hack" or a "macho blowhard" with a "background in business or marketing", she's a techie. Her background is in product development and management. Like David Packard, Walt Disney, Ted Turner, Jeff Bezos, Steve Jobs and even Bill Gates.

A spot-on analysis from an insider in the trenches of what is wrong with corporate America, and why they are destroying the country's well-being. The attempt at rising up against corporate drone-ism by the 99% was insufficient. Maybe when we are all out of work a serious revolt will occur.

Mayer took a perfectly good photo uploading site known as flickr and turned it into a giant mess. The site is now reminiscent of Windows 8 in presentation since all pictures now appear as tiles on your home landing page and now requires tons of scrolling and searching. It is more like a version of a social networking site than a place for more adept photographers to post their stuff and receive criticism and suggestions or high praise for their work. She threw users a bone by giving everyone a terabyte of storage and raised the price of the service if you don't want to see ads. People left in droves for ipernity, a site that is very similar to the old flickr and is very simple to use. Many of the more serious photographers moved there from flickr.
