Dear Amy: I am a 21-year-old business professional fresh out of university. My fiancé (28 years old) and I have been engaged since last fall, but I’ve kept the engagement a secret. He is kind, thoughtful and supportive, and I know he loves me unconditionally, as I love him. We’ve been together for two years.

Do your fiance the biggest favor you could ever do for him: return your ring to him. If you can't put on your big girl pants by now, you never will. NOTHING will convince your family that he is good enough for you. It ain't like he's an axe-murderer. He doesn't have a college degree. At the first signs of trouble, financial or otherwise, you will run back to your family. Tell your mother that you let him go because YOU aren't good enough for him, not the other way around.
