i think the gophers will be pretty good this yr. maybe 6 wins, im hoping for 7 but they will be competitive against the nebraskas and wisconsins. just look at the positions...no doubt they will be better at qb, rb, and ol. the wr group wont be spectacular but its still not bad. fruchte and engel run 4.4s and have decent size. kj maye could be ready to emerge out of the slot and harbison was supposed to be their best wr last yr until the injury. he says he feels better than before the injury. dl will be better and hageman is ready to bust out as a star. lb will be better, the 2 mlbs are solid, hill was the best lb last yr and campbell has stud potential. the cbs lost a couple solid seniors but murray and boddy are emerging as very good players and wells could be a star. the safetys are reliable veterans. the biggest factor as always will be how much can nelson improve. if he didnt improve we still will be as good as last yr if not better. if he is very good the team will be very good.

Well done Sid. Few in sports writing get into the business side of the business the way Sid does. Very insightful. Interesting that the Bears, with a much bigger market are worth only $200mm more than the Vikes who, in turn, are worth more than Detroit and their larger-but-shrinking market. Nice work on Jerry Kill and his results. Can't help but feel Gophers will at least compete under his leadership. And regarding Mike Grant, Maturi may also have been spooked by what happened to Todd Dodge at North Texas at the time MAson was being replaced. Dodge was hired out of Southlake Carroll, the Texas high school version of Eden Prairie, in about 2007 and failed to win in rather spectacular fashion. An 88-zip blowout loss to OU in the first game and not much better thereafter.

What a misleading headline. It fooled me. For a second I thought Sid was referring to Gopher players being NFL ready. LOL.

How many wins did they have last year. 6 wins is garbage and shows no improvement. What...is Kill on the 40 year plan to improve this team?

Yes, 14 tackling dummies.........

Very misleading comparison. Sid's listing of only the seven current Gopher players on NFL rosters does not count all the former NFL players from Mason's teams including Tyrone Carter, Tony Carter, Darrell Reid, Marion Barber III, Jack Brewer, John Schlecht, Craig Sauer, Thomas Tapeh, Darrel Thompson, Ryan Thelwell, Freddie Foggie, Derek Rackley, Adam Haayer, Arland Bruce, Laurence Maroney, Thomas Hamner, Jerome Davis, Antoine Burns, Josh Rawlings, Randy Rasmussen, Ron Johnson, Anthony Montgomery, Ben Hamilton, and Greg Eslinger, and many more who were in training camps and didn't play, which blows away Jer's number. Even more impressive is this list of 333 former Gophers who have played in the NFL - http://www.gophergridiron.com/page/show/330198-nfl-all-time-roster

Is Jerry Kill's job in jeopardy or what is the reason for the story.

guth54Aug. 23, 13 6:54 AM

The Gopher will go winless in the Big Ten this year. Sid, you are going to regret spending so much time smooching Jerry Kill's #**.

gopherfollyAug. 23, 13 7:08 AM

lol, guth, we have to tailgate some time!

guth54Aug. 23, 13 8:22 AM

gopherfolly; I'll be at TCF 11-23 to watch the Badger stomp the Gophers 60-0. I predict Jerry entertain the fans, mostly Wisconsin, with a face plant at half time.
